Hi I’m Dr Hayley Frend!

I’m a science communicator, researcher, and lifelong explorer of the unknown. I created this blog to bring families together through a shared love of discovery—because I believe that curiosity has no age limit!

With a PhD in molecular biology and a background in science communication, I’ve spent years breaking down complex scientific discoveries into engaging, accessible content. But my passion for science outreach started long before that. While studying for my undergraduate degree, I fell in love with science communication, winning multiple awards for my work. After completing my PhD at Cambridge, I worked professionally in the field, sharing groundbreaking discoveries with the public before taking time to focus on my family.

This blog is the result of two of my greatest passions—science and family.

A Little More About Me

Science has always been my passion, but my journey hasn’t been a straightforward one. As a child, I was diagnosed with dyslexia and dyspraxia and told I would never pass an exam. But I refused to let that define me. I went on to graduate top of my class in my undergraduate degree, earn a PhD at Cambridge, and build a career in science communication—proving that no obstacle is too big when you love what you do.

Now, I want to bring that same sense of possibility and excitement to others. No scientific discovery is too complex to be understood if it’s explained well, and no one ever loses their ability to be amazed by the world around them.

Why I Started Trailblazing Science

Science is full of wonder, but it’s often presented in a way that either oversimplifies for children or assumes adults already have a strong scientific background. I wanted to create a space where families can explore real, cutting-edge scientific discoveries together—where kids aren’t limited to basic science concepts, and adults aren’t just reading to teach, but to be genuinely engaged themselves.

This blog is the result of two of my greatest passions—science and family. My love for sharing science with children only deepened when I had children of my own. Seeing the world through their eyes—the endless curiosity, the joy of discovery—reminded me of why I fell in love with science in the first place. Their excitement reignited my own, showing me that learning together doesn’t just teach children—it reshapes how we, as adults, see the world too.

That’s why every article on this blog is written from two perspectives—one for adults and one for children. You can toggle between them and experience the same discovery in a way that’s exciting and thought-provoking for everyone.

More than just reading, I want to spark discussions, curiosity, and shared learning experiences—whether it’s a parent and child talking about space exploration over dinner, a homeschool family diving into the latest breakthroughs in medicine, or a curious adult rediscovering their love of science.

Join Me on This Journey!

I’m so excited to have you here! Whether you’re a parent, an educator, a curious adult, or a lifelong learner, this blog is designed for you.
